TONIGHT (ONLINE ONLY) – NUJ London Magazine Branch – Legacy of the Miners’ Strike + AGM, Monday 17 March

17th March 2025 By hello

Miners' strike - Blood, Sweat and Tears book

Date and time: Monday 17 March 2025, 6.30pm

Location: ONLINE ONLY – Please don’t come to Headland House as it will be closed. (Full Zoom details at the bottom of this invite.)

1. The Miners’ Strike 40 years on and the lessons for today

Our March meeting will start with discussion of a new book documenting the 1984-85 Miners’ Strike and what it can teach us as trade union activists and media workers today.

Author and Magazine branch member Mike Simons will talk about how the book, titled Blood Sweat and Tears, came together – describing key moments in the miners’ struggles and how supporters documented events on the picket lines and within communities to fight back against the establishment narrative, record the reality and build solidarity for their struggle.

For more information and to order Blood Sweat and Tears visit www.minersstrike.com

Discussion will be followed by the branch Annual General Meeting (AGM), plus regular branch business including Late Notice Motions for Delegate Meeting and regular monthly branch business.

2. Branch AGM 2025

The branch is holding its AGM this month, including election of a new committee, reports from the Chair, Membership and Treasurer and an update from our new National Organiser for Magazines Huda Elmi.

Please come along to hear updates on progress and plans for Magazine branches and chapels and have your say – and contact branch officers (details below) to put yourself forward for a position on the committee and any ideas for planning activity for the year ahead.

3. Branch business

• Approval of February meeting minutes (attached)

About London Magazine Branch

Branches are where members can regularly have their say on the union’s policies and activities. It is the branches rather than the chapels (workplace groups) that elect delegates and send motions to the union’s annual conference. Read more
