  • EVENT: End impunity for crimes against journalists – 2 Nov 2-5pm

EVENT: End impunity for crimes against journalists – 2 Nov 2-5pm

Panel Discussion on the United Nations international day to end of impunity for crimes against journalists.

The National Union of Journalists London Freelance Branch is partnering with King’s College London Global Digital Cultures Research Group and King’s College London Universities and Colleges Union branch to hold a symposium to mark the UN Day to end Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.

We will be hearing from John McDonnell MP; CEO of Basement Films, Ben De Pear;  broadcaster Sangita Myska; Neve Gordan, professor of human rights law at Queen Mary University of London; Tayab Ali, of Bindman’s solicitors; Dr Moosa Qureshi of Health Workers 4 Palestine; and Joseph Willetts, the Parliamentary Liaison Officer for CAABU – for what promises to be an in-depth examination of how to protect the messenger.

UNESCO – the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization – states that “ending impunity for crimes against journalists is an essential precondition to guarantee freedom of expression and access to information for all.” The unprecedented number of journalists slaughtered in the Gaza genocide gives this new urgency. As UNESCO continues: “journalists, media professionals, and associated media personnel exercise their duties in highly dangerous contexts. Too many pay an unacceptably high price, including death, enforced disappearance, torture, unlawful detention, and kidnapping, for producing independent, reliable, and verifiable information. Whether reporting on conflict, humanitarian disasters, climate or health crises, journalists continue to face disproportionate threats and higher levels of impunity for extrajudicial killings, torture, en- forced disappearances and arbitrary detention, as well as intimidation and harassment, both offline and online.”

We invite journalists and students to join us from 2-5pm at the Nash Lecture Theatre on the Strand Campus at King’s College London for a panel + reception.

  • 🍉 Honouring Gazan journalists – Wed 27 August, 5.30 pm opposite Downing St.

🍉 Honouring Gazan journalists – Wed 27 August, 5.30 pm opposite Downing St.

London Freelance Branch is calling on journalists and media workers to join us on Wednesday 27 August at 17:30 opposite Downing St, where we will honour the courageous reporting of the journalists of Gaza.

We will read out the names of those killed and honour the bravery of our colleagues who continue to report, knowing that they may be killed at any moment.

We express our solidarity with our colleagues in Gaza and demand protection for those reporting, justice, and an end to impunity for the slaughter of journalists in the Gazan genocide. The reading of the names is the main event. Sadly the “double-tap” airstrike on Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, killing journalists, alongside rescue workers, as they responded to the first “tap”, along with further confirmations of earlier deaths by the International Federation of Journalists, brings our count of colleagues killed in Gaza to 222 – plus 2 in the West Bank, 4 in Israel, 9 in Lebanon, 1 in Syria and 3 in Iran.

We will also hear a recorded message from Al Jazeera Gazan reporter Wael Al Dahdouh.  Ahmed Alanouq of the Gazan “We Are Not Numbers” project will speak, as will Sangita Myska, late of LBC Radio.

This event will follow the handing in of a letter, setting out demands and questions to Keir Starmer, to 10 Downing Street at 16:00. You are welcome to come to wave us off then, too, if you can. The letter is now co-signed by London Central Branch, NUJ London Magazine Branch, London Digital Media Branch, officers of the FT Group Chapel, Brussels Branch, NUJ Ethics Council and noted film-maker Sarah Beddington.

Please join us when you can. Please share this widely.
