Dear Colleagues

This month’s meeting will lead off with a talk commemorating the centenary of the General Strike, including a fascinating look at the role of the media and NUJ members.

The 1926 General Strike was a critical moment for the whole trade union movement, but it was also a challenge for anyone and everyone involved getting news and information about the strike out to a news-hungry population. Journalists were caught between their employers’ expectations and loyalty to the wider trade union movement.

Based on research into the strike in his home town of Hounslow, and NUJ records held in the Modern Records Centre at the University of Warwick, branch member Lewis Emery will take us back to those days, to a time when newsprint was king, when radio came of age, and social media meant street meetings and union rallies.

To be followed by branch business.

All welcome – we look forward to seeing you there.

About London Magazine Branch

Branches are where members can regularly have their say on the union’s policies and activities. It is the branches rather than the chapels (workplace groups) that elect delegates and send motions to the union’s annual conference. Read more
