SUMMARY:The future of open access publishing
DESCRIPTION:February Branch Meeting \nMonday\, 17 February 2020 from 18:30-20:30\nNUJ Headland House\n72 Acton Street Kings Cross\, WC1X 9NB London\, United Kingdom\nWith guest speaker Pete Wrobel \nMany of our members working on academic journals will be aware of recent developments in open access business models\, which raise the prospect of major changes in the way academic publishers operate. Some US and European research funders are now demanding that any papers from studies they support are published on open-access platforms. \nWhile this could have many positive benefits for the academic research community and bring some welcome scrutiny of the costs of peer-review publishing\, it is vital that policy-makers recognise the essential contribution of highly skilled editorial staff in maintaining the quality and integrity of academic literature. \nHow will open access models affect academic journals publishing in future and what can the NUJ do to support members in this field? \nNUJ member Pete Wrobel\, who has a wealth of experience in scientific publishing including as former managing editor of Nature\, will lead a discussion of the future of open access publishing and how our members should engage with this. \n\nNotice of Branch Annual General Meeting (AGM)\nThe branch will hold the AGM on Monday 16 March 2020 at NUJ Headland House\, 72 Acton Street\, London WC1X 9NB. This will be an opportunity to review the work of the branch\, elect branch officers and set out our objectives for the year. \n \nMEETING AGENDA\n1. Discussion open access publishing\n2. Preparation for DM 2020 – including any further motion amends\n3. Notice of Branch AGM (see below)\n4. Branch motions (see below)\n5. Adoption new members/\n6. Workplace reports\n7. AOB \nBranch motions\nThe following motion\, postponed from last month’s meeting\, has been brought back for debate:\nThe new branch website is now up and running\, but the branch committee requires some technical assistance with its on going development.\nThe branch resolves to pay £150 this calendar year to web developer for technical and development assistance on the branch website.

DESCRIPTION:London Magazine Branch Meeting\nMonday 21 October\n6.30pm\, NUJ Headland House\, 72 Acton Street\, London WC1X 9NB (nearest tube\, King’s Cross) \nGENDER PAY INEQUALITY\nHow to challenge it and win! \nThe revelations about stark pay disparities between men and women performing the same roles at the BBC have brought the issue of gender pay inequality to the fore. \nThe industry as a whole is coming under increasing pressure to respond. However\, reports of companies’ gender pay gaps suggest there is still much to be done\, particularly in our sector. \nSome journal and book publishers are among the worst offenders – with one company reporting a 40% gender pay gap two years running. \nWhat can employees do to take this issue up with management and what measures can be implemented to address pay inequality? \nSpeakers Martine Croxall from the BBC and Federica Cocco from the FT will talk about their experiences\, the approaches members have taken and how they have been able to make a positive change. \nMembers will have the opportunity to talk about pay inequalities and the gender pay gap in their workplaces\, share ideas and get support to take steps to address it. \nPlus branch business – including motions and nominations for elected bodies at Delegate Meeting 2020 (#DM2020) \nSandwiches and light refreshments provided.\nChildcare and reasonable travel costs can be covered.
