SUMMARY:Ensuring a safe return to workplaces
DESCRIPTION:NUJ London Magazine Branch – April 2021 branch meeting\nJoin the Zoom meeting via our: www.facebook.com/groups/LondonMagsNUJ/\nWith Natasha Morris\, NUJ legal officer and Liz Else\, Branch H&S officer \nThis month we are holding an advice clinic for members and reps on how to deal with any concerns about returning to work in the office. \nThe TUC has emphasised that there is still a need for strengthened guidance for employers on making workplaces safe\, even with the roll-out of the vaccination programme. \nSo what can employees expect when going back to their offices and what should a safe return involve? Do companies have to share their risk assessments with all employees? Can individuals refuse to return? What key aspects should members be looking at – for example\, how can you ensure adequate ventilation and social distancing as well as hygiene and sanitation measures are being put in place? How can staff self-isolation be assured? And what are the implications of hot-desking? \nNatasha Morris\, NUJ legal officer\, and Liz Else\, Magazine Branch H&S rep\, will lead a discussion and Q&A session to help members and reps get prepared. \n\nSee the NUJ COVID19 H&S Page including TUC “A Safe Return to the Workplace” PDF\nhttps://www.nuj.org.uk/resource/tuc-guide-april-2021–a-safe-return-to-the-workplace-.html \n  \nPlus – workplace reports and branch business\nProvisional agenda\n\nReturn to work advice clinic\nWorkplace reports\nBranch motion (see below)\nDM update – including Late Notice Motions (see below)\nMABIC/NEC feedback\nMembership – new and lapsed members\nAOB\n\nLook forward to seeing you on Monday. \nAll the best \nNUJ London Magazine Branch Committee\nFor any queries please contact Branch Chair Caroline Price on price.carrie@gmail.com  \nJoin our Facebook page: \nwww.facebook.com/groups/LondonMagsNUJ/ \nVisit the newly revamped branch website: https://www.nujlmb.org.uk/\n \nBranch motion \n  \nDonation to NUJ Extra \nThis branch notes: \nNUJ extra is the NUJ charity\, and as such\, it is our charity. \nNUJ Extra has launched a third wave of support for members who have lost work due to the pandemic\, which will put extra pressure on its financial resources. This is expected to last until 21 June. Members who are the sole income earner and have dependants\, who have a caring role\, or who have no other available support\, will be prioritised for support \nOver the past year\, NUJ Extra has helped a woman with two young children who had to flee her alcoholic husband\, children who have lost a parent\, many members made redundant and left in penury\, and bought an air purifier for a member with recurrent lung infections due to cystic fibrosis\, among many other vital interventions. \nThis branch donated £2\,000 to the charity at the beginning of the pandemic. \nThis branch resolves: \nTo donate £2\,000 [or other such amount to be agreed at the meeting on 12 April 2021] to NUJ Extra. \nDM Late Notice Motions \n  \n\n Northern Ireland journalists\n\nThis DM condemns the physical attacks and threats against a photo journalist and other journalists during the recent riots and disturbances in Northern Ireland. \nAll journalists should be able to carry out their work free from all threats and violence. \nDM expresses solidarity with bus workers in Belfast who were also subject to attacks. \nDM applauds the industrial action taken by the bus workers in response. \nThe NUJ will support all such efforts and initiatives by trade unionists in the north of Ireland to stand united against intimidation and attacks\, including from paramilitaries\, and from state coercion\, and support all trade union initiatives to campaign for a society based upon equality\, justice\, a living wage\, decent housing and real hope for all communities based upon the common interests of all working class people \n\n Oppose the new Police Bill.\n\nDM notes: \nThe Tories’ new Police\, Crime\, Sentencing and Courts Bill attempts to limit the right to protest in the wake of Covid pandemic. \nFollowing a decade and more of austerity we will be asked to pay the price for the Covid-19 crisis. Working class communities\, women\, BAME communities and disabled people have suffered disproportionately. \nThe new Policing Bill gives police new powers to stop protests that cause “serious disruption” to an organisation or have a “relevant impact” on people nearby. \nA further clause in the Bill criminalises protests causing “serious annoyance” – every employer and reactionary could use this claim to curb protest. \nDM further notes: \nThe attempt by police to break up a vigil in memory of Sarah Everard on Clapham Common. \nAttacks by Police in Bristol and elsewhere against peaceful protests against the Bill \nThe Bill increases stop and search powers that will be used to scapegoat minorities and increase racism. \nThe Bill includes a new trespass offense that will be used to target Gypsy\, Roma and Traveller groups. \nClauses against “unauthorised encampments” will be used against Gypsy\, Roma and Traveller groups potentially seizing homes\, putting parents in prison and children into care. It could also hit homeless people making makeshift shelters and protesters. \nDM believes: \nThe Police Bill is an assault on our right to assembly and protest aiming to make it as ineffective as possible. \nThe Bill is a threat to trade union activity\, restricting our right to protest\, placing further limits on our freedom to picket during industrial disputes. \nDM resolves to: \n\nOppose any attempt by government to use the COVID-19 crisis to limit the right to protest.\nCampaign against the whole of the Police\, Crime\, Sentencing and Courts Bill.\nWork with other campaigns – human rights\, environmental\, anti-racist and all those defending the right to protests \, and GRT organisations fighting the criminalisation of their way of life -to oppose and defeat this attack on our rights\nCall for a coordinated Trade Union response to this Bill through the TUC

SUMMARY:NUJ London Magazine Branch – AGM 2021
DESCRIPTION:Dear members \n  \nPlease join us for our next branch meeting on Monday 15 March\, when we’ll be holding our Annual General Meeting and electing a new branch committee\, reviewing progress and planning activities and campaigning for the year ahead. \nThis will be a great opportunity to have your say and shape the work of the branch to ensure it’s representative and accountable to members. \nOver the past year we have switched to online meetings and continued to run workshops\, including on working safely through the pandemic and dealing with redundancy\, as well as inviting speakers to discuss topics such as the future of magazines post-Covid and how we can combat racism in journalism. What are your views on the meetings and what can we be doing to support members and chapel reps better? What training workshops should we be running? What campaigning do you want the branch to do? \nWe’d love to welcome some more new members on board\, so please do come along and put yourself forward to contribute to the committee. There are several branch officer roles\, which can be shared\, or you can be a co-opted member of the committee to simply have a say in the running of the branch. For more info about branch democracy and the different reps’ roles see the NUJ website and you can contact the branch chair or secretary using the details below. \nAfter the AGM\, we’ll also be going through usual monthly branch business and discussing the NUJ national Delegate Meeting which will now be held remotely Friday 21 and Saturday 22 May.  This will include electing potential new delegates to the conference – for more info on that please contact the Branch’s DM liaison officer Adam Di Chiara at londonmagmember@gmail.com \nThe meeting will be held by Zoom\, details below. \nLook forward to seeing you next Monday. \nAll the best \nNUJ London Magazine Branch Committee \nEvent details can be found on our facebook page: www.facebook.com/groups/LondonMagsNUJ/ \n  \nLondon Magazine Branch AGM\nTo include Chair\, Membership and Treasurers reports\, election of new committee. Followed by monthly branch business. \nAgenda \n\nApprove February minutes\nAGM\nBranch motions (see below)\nWorkplace reports\nNew members adoption\nDelegate Meeting matters\nAOB\n\n  \nBranch motions\nThe branch has received the following motion: \nPurchase of ‘Law at Work’ for Chapels \nThis branch notes that the LRD has recently updated its ‘Law at Work’ book to – ‘Law at work 2020 – the trade union guide to employment law’. \nThis is an essential resource for Chapel reps to keep up to date with employment law. While the book is available online through the NUJ’s account with LRD\, paper copies would be much easier for reps to use in the workplace while meeting with members. \nThe branch resolves to purchase copies of Law at Work for Chapels on request (at a cost of £49.75 per copy) with the number of copies to be at the discretion of the Committee. \nProposed by: AR (BMJ) \n  \nFor any queries please contact Branch Chair Caroline Price on price.carrie@gmail.com or Branch Secretary Cristina Lago –  cristina.lago@gmail.com \nJoin our Facebook page: \nwww.facebook.com/groups/LondonMagsNUJ/

SUMMARY:Can we aim for 'Zero Covid'?
DESCRIPTION:NUJ London Magazine Branch February meeting\n  \nDear Magazine Branch members \nHope you are all keeping well.  Please see details of our upcoming February branch meeting and a reminder about the Branch AGM in March below. \n  \n\n\n February branch meeting: Can we aim for zero Covid?\n\n\nWith guest speaker from the Zero Covid campaign (https://zerocovid.uk) \n  \nTime:  Monday 22 February\, 6.30 pm – 8.00 pm  \nJoin the Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89776225769 \n At this month’s branch meeting we will be discussing how the UK can best overcome the pandemic and the potential for a zero Covid strategy. \nAfter nearly a year of lockdowns\, can we learn anything from countries that pursued an alternative strategy to dealing with the pandemic? \nThe UK’s national Covid-19 vaccination programme is offering hope that we can prevent serious illness and deaths from the virus. \nBut many leading scientists are warning that vaccination alone is not enough\, and that we need to implement other measures to drive down infections and safely leave lockdown. \nMoreover\, they argue a so-called ‘zero-Covid’ strategy to completely suppress the virus and use a robust test\, trace and isolate programme to control further outbreaks will allow society to open up sooner and avoid future lockdowns. \nWhy do we need a zero Covid strategy and what would it involve? Can it work in the UK? And why should Trade Unions support the approach? \nTo explore these questions our speaker from the Zero Covid campaign will lead off the discussion. He is a former journalist and NUJ London Magazine Branch member\, who now works in the legal sector\, and is a member of the steering committee of the Zero Covid campaign. \nThe branch has received a motion for debate on affiliating to the Zero Covid campaign (see below). \n  \n\n\n March branch meeting – Annual General Meeting\, Monday 15 March\n\n\nA reminder that next month’s meeting will be the AGM where we review the branch’s activities and processes\, and elect a new branch committee for the next 12 months. \nPlease do get in touch with the Branch chair / secretary (details below) with your ideas for how the branch can better serve members and put yourself forward for a branch officer role – we are really keen for greater participation and representation on the committee. \nMeeting agenda – Monday 22 February\n\nGuest speaker\nBranch motion (see below)\nWorkplace reports\nEthics council feedback – incl. support for NUJ FOI campaign; facilities time\nQ to branch: Re publication of salaries\nMarch meeting AGM\nAOB\n\n  \nBranch motion to back the Zero Covid campaign\nThis branch notes the tragic death toll due to SARS-COV2\, with >100\,000 dead from the virus\, due to the catastrophic failures in the UK approach to the pandemic. \nIt also notes: \n\nThe ongoing uncertainty about the Government’s long-term pandemic strategy including how to exit the current ‘lockdown’\nThe concern that restrictions may be lifted too soon without sufficient suppression of the virus and without a robust Find\, Test\, Trace and Isolate system in place to control future outbreaks\nThat the most disadvantaged\, black and minority ethnic groups and most exposed workers in society are bearing the greatest burden of the current inadequate measures to control the virus\nThe need for greater restrictions to close unsafe workplaces\, greater support for furloughed and laid off workers and for people to self-isolate\nThat the strategy proposed by leading scientists\, including those on the Independent SAGE group\, to aim for elimination of Covid could end lockdown sooner and avoid the risk of future cycles of lockdowns\n\nThe branch resolves to affiliate to the Zero Covid campaign to help build a movement to beat the pandemic in the most equitable way possible. \nThe cost of affiliation is £25 per year. \nProposed: Adam DC \n  \nFor any queries please contact Branch Chair Caroline Price on price.carrie@gmail.com or Branch Secretary Cristina Lago –  cristina.lago@gmail.com \nJoin our Facebook page: \nwww.facebook.com/groups/LondonMagsNUJ/ \n  \n

SUMMARY:The future of open access publishing
DESCRIPTION:February Branch Meeting \nMonday\, 17 February 2020 from 18:30-20:30\nNUJ Headland House\n72 Acton Street Kings Cross\, WC1X 9NB London\, United Kingdom\nWith guest speaker Pete Wrobel \nMany of our members working on academic journals will be aware of recent developments in open access business models\, which raise the prospect of major changes in the way academic publishers operate. Some US and European research funders are now demanding that any papers from studies they support are published on open-access platforms. \nWhile this could have many positive benefits for the academic research community and bring some welcome scrutiny of the costs of peer-review publishing\, it is vital that policy-makers recognise the essential contribution of highly skilled editorial staff in maintaining the quality and integrity of academic literature. \nHow will open access models affect academic journals publishing in future and what can the NUJ do to support members in this field? \nNUJ member Pete Wrobel\, who has a wealth of experience in scientific publishing including as former managing editor of Nature\, will lead a discussion of the future of open access publishing and how our members should engage with this. \n\nNotice of Branch Annual General Meeting (AGM)\nThe branch will hold the AGM on Monday 16 March 2020 at NUJ Headland House\, 72 Acton Street\, London WC1X 9NB. This will be an opportunity to review the work of the branch\, elect branch officers and set out our objectives for the year. \n \nMEETING AGENDA\n1. Discussion open access publishing\n2. SUMMARY:Gender Pay Inequality: How to challenge it and win! London Magazine Branch Meeting
DESCRIPTION:London Magazine Branch Meeting\nMonday 21 October\n6.30pm\, NUJ Headland House\, 72 Acton Street\, London WC1X 9NB (nearest tube\, King’s Cross) \nGENDER PAY INEQUALITY\nHow to challenge it and win! \nThe revelations about stark pay disparities between men and women performing the same roles at the BBC have brought the issue of gender pay inequality to the fore. \nThe industry as a whole is coming under increasing pressure to respond. However\, reports of companies’ gender pay gaps suggest there is still much to be done\, particularly in our sector. \nSome journal and book publishers are among the worst offenders – with one company reporting a 40% gender pay gap two years running. \nWhat can employees do to take this issue up with management and what measures can be implemented to address pay inequality? \nSpeakers Martine Croxall from the BBC and Federica Cocco from the FT will talk about their experiences\, the approaches members have taken and how they have been able to make a positive change. \nMembers will have the opportunity to talk about pay inequalities and the gender pay gap in their workplaces\, share ideas and get support to take steps to address it. \nPlus branch business – including motions and nominations for elected bodies at Delegate Meeting 2020 (#DM2020) \nSandwiches and light refreshments provided.\nChildcare and reasonable travel costs can be covered.
